Go and See
Mark 6:30-43; John 5:16-18, 36, 44-46; Psalm 63:1-5
The Feeding of the 5,000 is the only miracle that is covered in all four Gospels. Why this miracle?
This miracle is coming off the disciples missionary trip; their return ; the most climactic moments of their lives. It also comes upon the frustration and anger growing among the religious leaders that don’t like what Jesus is doing.
Every moment of this miracle (and all of what Jesus does) is to testify that Jesus has authority. Correlations between Moses and Jesus during this event are amazing:
- Moses crossed over the sea, Jesus crosses over the water to find a desolate place after he spoke at the previous speaking engagement. People were so eager to see and hear Jesus that when they noticed he had left, they ran on foot around the water to be there before Jesus even arrived.
- Moses sent out 12 men to spy out the land, Jesus sent out the 12 disciples to find food to feed the crowd.
- Moses provided manna each day to feed the people – enough just for the day – that he would provide more the next day. Jesus provided enough food to feed the 5,000 men (but more like 20,000 people altogether) until they ate were satisfied….there was still some left over!
This overabundance of food for the crowd shows that Jesus will always have enough….will always be enough. The purpose of this miracle wasn’t just to feed people. Jesus Christ is the only one that can satisfy the longing of the human soul. We worship not because we are showing Him we love Him, but because He constantly love us. He is steadfast in His love to us even when we are not steadfast in our love to him.
Is He enough for you?
